We Quit Our Jobs At 41 to See The World!

We Quit

After 14 years working for one company, an opportunity came up for me and my girlfriend to quit our jobs with no regrets or burnt bridges.  The company we both worked for was making some changes that we didn’t like, so we felt it was a good time for us to make a change too. We considered our many options carefully:

  • Tough it out with our employer.
  • Take new jobs with clients or competitors.
  • Start our own company doing the same type of work.

After considering all the options, we decided to go with a less common choice. We chose something that most people our age only dream about:

  • Quit our jobs to travel.

An Opportunity We Couldn’t Refuse

People that travel extensively typically seem to be wandering backpackers in their 20s, or in their 60s and 70s sailing the seas on cruise ships.  At 41 years old, we are young and healthy enough to do things older people might not be able to do. We are also old enough to have experienced the loss of friends and family before their time to cancer, illness, and accidents. Life is short. We need to take advantage of whatever opportunities come our way. It’s not very often a couple can both leave their careers as middle-aged adults.

See The World

We chose to travel because we want to see the world through our own eyes. Over the last decade my girlfriend and I have traveled together primarily as an escape from our day jobs. Our trips were usually limited to long weekends, but every few years we would usually be able to squeeze in a two week excursion. We never expected to have this opportunity to travel extensively. Aside from our typical weekend trips, our longer trips were limited to “highlight tours.” We would go see the most popular sights, take some pictures, and then run off to the next destination. We were tourists. We want to be travelers.
